The “Water” Effect

These days, the major point in the health tips in whatever form of media is “Drinks lots (or loads?) of water”. Some reports are even “merciful” in explaining the benefits; although they cite them as new discoveries. Usually they go on to describe the physiological benefits (yawn!) and striking one among them is the statement “It will make your skin glow!”.

I felt the word “glow” so seductive when associated with “skin”. So I decided to try that. The propelling thought was very basic. It’s very simple unlike going behind the current cosmetics for men (!) or any expensive accessories and gadgets to flaunt (just like that!) or even more expensive apparels to shine and show-off in public (old thought, I know!). Here just drink water and that too, very cheap. So simple. A self-experiment, which I felt, without any side-effects but wanted to see some effects!

Again, after some ‘serious’ thoughts, I found the best place to follow. Office. Free water. Free bottles. Any quantity! Again heard from somewhere that tea and coffee will reduce the water content inside the body. So planned to avoid that too.

One fine morning I started with the experiment. Took a bottle full of water. Started drinking comfortable every ten minutes. Within 30-40 minutes, I was done with a full bottle of water. Again went to fill it up. Continued doing the same thing. To admit the truth, I was thirsty too! But after sometime, I realized the truth. Actually a serious thought. How difficult it would have been if people never had rest rooms at their “comfortable” reach when it was required? Nevertheless, my ‘visits’ were so frequent. Met many people there multiple times (in a single day!). Even though no one asked, I could sense the obvious (sarcastic too!) questions from their faces. No…No telepathy, just some guesses. They went like, “Are you at work here?”, “How many times a day (with the extra element of exclamation)?”, “Did I see you thrice here before, the same day?” and even “You here again. How so many times?”. So I tried answering in my mind (through my face!) like “No…I work when I take breaks from here”, “Even I didn’t count”, “Yeah I too!!” and “Since they don’t allow me to ladies rest room even at least for a change, I still come here only! And why you too are seen here again and again?” respectively.

Anyway, I continued the same thing for a lot of days and found no effects or even side-effects. The skin didn’t ‘glow’ or didn’t even show a readiness to ‘glow’. Later found another study that says “Excess water puts only pressure on one’s bladder and have no extra advantages!!”. Alas! This is scientific and the previous one had no scientific explanation. Three cheers to science! But I am not reducing my water intake. And that is for no particular reason. Simply…just like that!! After all it’s just water, plain “water”!!!

That's funny.. of course you worked between bathroom breaks, just as smokers work between smoke breaks! :?)

I have tried this experiment too and found that a delicate balance is necessary.. I also read somewhere that depending on one's own unique characteristics (body weight, etc.) different amounts of water is beneficial. I do notice when I don't drink enough water my skin becomes dull....not enough water also leads to kidney stones...
